Proteolix starts clinical trial of multiple myeloma drug

Proteolix Inc. enrolled the first patient in a mid-stage clinical trial of its drug carfilzomib, intended as a treatment for multiple myeloma.

The South San Francisco drug company is running the test with the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium at 10 centers associated with the consortium. Centers participating in the Phase II trial include Emory University, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Michigan and Washington University. Patients enrolled in the study will have relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma -- meaning their cancer has reappeared after they were treated with at least two other FDA-approved therapies and that their cancer is restant to treatment.

Nicotinic receptors may be important targets for treatment of multiple addictions

For years, scientists have known that some people are biologically more susceptible to drug addiction than others, but they have only been able to speculate why.

In the August 15, 2007 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers at the University of Chicago report on a study that may help answer this question.

They discovered that rats most likely to self-administer addictive drugs had a particular receptor in the brain that is more responsive than the same receptor in rats least likely to self-administer addictive drugs.

This receptor, known as the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), increases excitability within in the brains reward centers. In the animals that were more likely to take addictive drugs, the effects of these receptors were much stronger, leading to more profound excitation of the cells and pathways associated with reward.

Expert: Lindsay Lohan Likely to Do 30-180 Days in Jail

Lindsay Lohan's best bet for avoiding jail time is to go back into rehab yet again and remove herself from a high-flying party lifestyle -- if not, she could be facing up to six months behind bars, legal observers said Wednesday.

Lohan, 21, was less than two weeks out of a recovery program and was voluntarily wearing an alcohol-monitoring device when she was arrested Tuesday in Santa Monica for investigation of misdemeanor driving both under the influence and with a suspended license, and felony cocaine possession.

Her lawyer, Blair Berk, has said she had a "relapse" and was receiving medical care at an undisclosed location.

A call to Lohan's publicist was not returned Wednesday.

The actress completed more than six weeks in rehab less than two weeks ago, and had checked into another recovery clinic in January.

No Charges in Infant Death

The mother of a baby who died after she left him in her car will not face charges for the baby's death.

The Wyoming County District Attorney has decided not to charge Lynn Brol of Cattaraugus County with any crime for her negligence in her son's death.

Brayden Brol, five months old, died a week and a half ago after police say Lynn Brol forgot to drop him off at daycare before she went to work in Arcade, Wyoming County. Instead, police say she went right to work with her son in the back seat.

Police say Brol did not find her son until she left work at 5 p.m. that evening.

District Attorney Gerald Stout says the decision not to charge Brol came after an intense investigation that included her family, her co-workers and the daycare where Brayden was normally taken.
