Counselors fight substance abuse threat
Substance abuse among Kitsap County's youth is nearly out of control, authorities say — and those fighting the battle think it could get worse before it gets any better. “We need to find a way to engage our kids," said New Beginnings Treatment Director Melody Dady. “We have to offer them something to get their interest going and to get them stimulated so they don't make the choice to follow a path to substance abuse." While the reasons kids choose to take drugs are complex, Dady feels it's the community's responsibility to offer constructive choices to kids who have too much energy and time on their hands. And even with the diversity of youth — kids don't all like the same things and come from similar backgrounds — Dady feels the first step is to offer them a safe haven. “A lot of times they're just bored and there's no place for them to go," Dady said.
Painkiller addiction can be tough to swallow
Drug addiction is a term that is easy to define but hard to pinpoint. Most medical literature says that drug addiction occurs when a person compulsively seeks to use a substance despite potentially negative consequences. In 2003, 15 million Americans reported taking a prescription drug for a nonmedical reason. The most abused type of prescription drug is a painkiller, specifically a type of drugs doctors call opioids. Painkiller addiction may occur in people who must routinely take such drugs for medical reasons but then find it hard to discontinue them when the pain dissipates. However, painkillers can be used recreationally. They not only provide physical relief from aches and pains, they may cause feelings of well-being and even euphoria.
Survey says: Wait, I have an e-mail
According to America Online's third annual Email Addiction survey, portable e-mail devices have led to an explosion of cyber-dependency. We're reading and writing e-mails in our cars, in our bathrooms, at the park when our children play and at church. Denver, according to the survey, is home to one of the most rampant e-mail-obsessed populations in the nation. And anyone who's been run off the road by a cretin typing into what looks like a calculator knows this. The AOL survey claims that the average e-mail user checks in about five times a day - lightweights, really - and 59 percent of you who use portable e-mail devices check it every single time a new message arrives in your inbox. In Denver, 65 percent of employees check their work e-mail during the weekend.

Addicted to the Internet
The Chinese Media announced that an experimental summer camp is being arranged to treat about 40 young and impressionable Internet addicts in China. Participating in the programme will be youths aged 14-22 after they first undergo psychological tests. This appears to be a milder version of the programme already applied at an Internet Addiction Rehabilitation Centre near Beijing that treats children addicted to on-line electronic games, porno sites and cybersex. As per the same source, about 2.6 youths in China, that is 13% of the users below 18 are considered Internet addicts. .
