Celebs aside, rehab can work

Lindsay Lohan is back in rehab. It's not surprising, really. How serious can one be about overcoming addiction when one jumps back into the Los Angeles party circuit — wearing an ankle bracelet designed to measure one's blood-alcohol content — days after checking out of a chic substance-abuse treatment center?

Lohan faces new charges of misdemeanor drunken driving, felony cocaine possession and driving on a suspended license following an incident early Tuesday morning. She had been out of rehab less than two weeks.

It is not unusual to relapse in substance abuse recovery, celebrity or no. Actor Daniel Baldwin, who allowed ABC News' "Primetime" to tape various stages of his three-month drug-treatment program in Malibu, Calif., reportedly tried nine other treatment centers in his battle with addiction.

Proteolix starts clinical trial of multiple myeloma drug

Proteolix Inc. enrolled the first patient in a mid-stage clinical trial of its drug carfilzomib, intended as a treatment for multiple myeloma.

The South San Francisco drug company is running the test with the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium at 10 centers associated with the consortium. Centers participating in the Phase II trial include Emory University, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Michigan and Washington University. Patients enrolled in the study will have relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma -- meaning their cancer has reappeared after they were treated with at least two other FDA-approved therapies and that their cancer is restant to treatment.

NY Seeks Smoking Ban at All Addiction Treatment Programs

Smoking would be banned at all addiction-treatment programs in New York State under proposed regulations from the state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS), the New York Times reported July 24.

The agency is proposing that by next July all treatment programs will be smoke free -- the ban would apply to staff as well as patients -- and have initiated programs to help clients quit. Programs would have to offer nicotine-addiction treatment to all patients, and provide free services to those who don't have insurance.

Those programs that fail to comply could lose their state certification.

If the plan is implemented, New York would be the first state to require addiction patients to get stop-smoking services, and only the second (after New Jersey) to ban smoking at residential treatment programs.

Winehouse and hubby check into drugs rehab

London, Aug 15 (IANS) Controversial British singer Amy Winehouse and her husband Blake Fileder-Civl checked themselves into drugs rehab after their fathers had a fight.

Winehouse was crying when her father and her father-in-law fought over heroin and cocaine addiction, reports mirror.co.uk

'It broke Amy's heart to see her parents and in-laws fighting. That was the point when she realised all the drink and drugs were causing huge problems for everybody,' said a source close to the family.

Winehouse and her husband flew to the US for counselling and detox treatment. Her drug problems came to boiling point when she collapsed after a three-day binge with her husband. She was taken to the hospital after consuming heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, horse tranquilliser ketamine and booze.

Back to Business | Returning from vacation and discerning the mirages from reality in a haze of carnies, rappers and ...

You'll have to forgive my lack of focus this week. After a long summer and the mind-numbing musical equivalent of a mega-sized sugar buzz from Dfest, I afforded myself a little R&R with the family last week.

A trip to St Louis was in order and a nice way to wrap up the summer before shipping the kids off to school or losing my mind. (Hey, it's one or the other and I'm voting to save some semblance of my sanity.) After all, there's no part of the summer stress that can't be remedied with baseball, Budweiser and rollercoasters, right? And there's no better place to get all three together than a little trip across I-44.

The heat must've gotten to me last week as I even ended up at an Aly & AJ concert at Six Flags. (Oh the things you'll do for a 10-year old daughter .

Is Rehab A Quick Fix Or Image Saver?

Actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested this morning on suspicion of driving drunk.

Police say they also found cocaine in one of her pockets.

Lohan just finished a stint in rehab.

This made Action News wonder how effective celebrity rehab is, and if the stars are using it as an excuse to clean up their image.

Dr. Mel Pohl at the Las Vegas Recovery Center says he feels for Lohan.

"I know that anybody who has addiction is suffering, they're suffering badly", Pohl says.

Lohan is among a handful of other celebrities who have made visits to prominent rehab centers, many in Malibu so called "star farms".

But Pohl wonders if she is getting the proper treatment there.

"Programs that offer respite and only respite are not doing a service to their clients. I think that recovery has to be offered as part of treatment".

ADA Applauds Legislators for 'Meth Mouth' Bills

Legislation Will Fight Oral Devastation Caused by Drug Abuse

WASHINGTON, July 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Robert Brandjord, immediate past president of the American Dental Association (ADA), joined legislators on Capitol Hill today to announce support of two federal bills aimed at preventing and treating "meth mouth," a condition where teeth can become blackened, stained, rotting and crumbling from methamphetamine addiction. The decay can occur rapidly, causing extensive tooth loss in as little as a year.

Dentists suspect several causes for meth mouth, including dry mouth, tooth grinding and clenching, and extended periods when users do not brush or floss their teeth.

Meth mouth has become so widespread in prisons that providing dental treatment to inmates suffering from this condition is severely taxing health care budgets within state correctional systems.

U-turn on drugs policy

THE Greens have reversed their soft drugs policy in a bid to appeal to the centre of Australian politics.

The party has for the first time stated its opposition to the legalisation of illegal drugs, according to its new Drugs, Substance Use and Addiction policy.

"The Australian Greens do not support the legalisation of currently illegal drugs," principle No.1 of the policy says.

Also, the Greens have called for a crackdown on drug dealers, including criminal penalties for offenders.

The Sunday Herald Sun has obtained a copy of the new 10-point policy, agreed on last week at a special National Council meeting.

Greens Senator Bob Brown said yesterday the new policy would take the party more to the centre of Australian politics.
