| Court makes it easier for patients to enter rehab
Pennsylvanians battling drug and alcohol addiction will not need a second opinion from their HMO before entering treatment programs, a state appeals court ruled. In a unanimous decision released Thursday, Commonwealth Court ruled that group insurance companies and HMOs must cover drug and alcohol treatment costs for policy holders referred to detoxification, rehabilitation and outpatient programs by a doctor or psychologist. The ruling will help about 15,000 state residents with private insurance who seek substance abuse treatment each year, said Deborah Beck, president of the Drug and Alcohol Service Providers Organization of Pennsylvania. It's a really important decision that I think gives power back to doctors and psychologists, said Beck, whose Harrisburg-based organization represents licensed treatment centers and school-run counseling programs.
How area’s elderly care facilities rate
Like much of Iowa, Johnson County's aging population is growing. So are the numbers of its elderly care facilities. As is the case with many areas in the country, the conversation has begun on whether these facilities are equipped to handle a population that is older and, generally, more sick than ever before. Prompted by reports of problems at two area nursing facilities, the Press-Citizen looked into the most recent inspections for many care facilities in Johnson County, excluding those that don't house or primarily care for seniors, or don't get licensed by the Iowa state Department of Inspections and Appeals. Reports from the past year show that the recent incidents at Legacy Gardens and Greenwood Manor, both of Iowa City, are not indicative of the average facility in the area.

'Doctor shoppers' bringing pills into Rocky Boy, Havre
A three-woman drug ring pumped nearly 6,000 tablets of opiates and depressants into the Havre and Rocky Boy's communities before it was busted by federal agents in 2005. The case illustrates how easily determined "doctor shoppers" can get multiple prescriptions for narcotics, often within the space of a day. .

Daniel Baldwin Documents Rehab Recovery For TV Show
NEW YORK, NY (July 17, 2007) -- Daniel Baldwin opened up about his cocaine addiction in a series of confessional video diaries, taped at various stages of his treatment, that were to be shown Tuesday night on ABC News' "Primetime." Baldwin, brother of actors William, Stephen and Alec Baldwin, allowed "Primetime" to chart his progress through a three-month drug treatment program at Renaissance Malibu, in Malibu, Calif. He taped more than 19 video entries for "Primetime." "I've been very thorough in my recovery, and identified where I am powerless," the 46-year-old actor said. "And I'm truly powerless over cocaine. There's no question about that in my life." Last year, police said they found Baldwin and another man in a Santa Monica motel, along with cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
