Woman pleads guilty to purse thefts

A 23-year-old woman pleaded guilty in Circuit Court yesterday to stealing purses at churches in Makiki and Manoa earlier this year.

Kellyn Cabral pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree burglary and second-degree theft in connection with incidents at Makiki Christian Church, St. Pius X Church and St. Francis School. She faces up to 10 years in prison.

Circuit Judge Richard Pollack granted Cabral supervised release on the condition that she heads directly to the Salvation Army Addiction Treatment Services from Oahu Community Correctional Center for drug treatment. ATS is a residential program in Nuuanu where Cabral is required to undergo drug treatment for a minimum of nine months.

She needs the help that ATS can provide for her, said her attorney, Myles Breiner, outside the courtroom.

Is Rehab A Quick Fix Or Image Saver?

Actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested this morning on suspicion of driving drunk.

Police say they also found cocaine in one of her pockets.

Lohan just finished a stint in rehab.

This made Action News wonder how effective celebrity rehab is, and if the stars are using it as an excuse to clean up their image.

Dr. Mel Pohl at the Las Vegas Recovery Center says he feels for Lohan.

"I know that anybody who has addiction is suffering, they're suffering badly", Pohl says.

Lohan is among a handful of other celebrities who have made visits to prominent rehab centers, many in Malibu so called "star farms".

But Pohl wonders if she is getting the proper treatment there.

"Programs that offer respite and only respite are not doing a service to their clients. I think that recovery has to be offered as part of treatment".

Homeless vets can get aid at center

VANCOUVER -- Air Force veteran Roxanne Clark lost her family and her house as she succumbed to a substance-abuse addiction in the late 1990s.

The Vancouver resident -- who, at the depth of her addiction, was homeless -- didn't know the Veterans Affairs Medical Center-Vancouver Campus, in the heart of her community, could help.

"For 19 years I drove by this place, and I had no idea what went on behind the fence," Clark told U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., on Tuesday, when the senator spent about two hours at the Community Reintegration Services building hearing about services offered to homeless vets.

And during a roundtable discussion with veterans and service providers, Murray said the importance of the Vancouver center -- a meeting place and temporary home for homeless veterans or veterans at risk of becoming homeless -- will grow as soldiers return from Iraq and Afghanistan and mental conditions emerge years after their service has ended.

Music legend Judy Collins copes with tragedy by helping others

Whenever the music landscape of the 1960s and '70s is revisited, one name invariably makes the short list of artists who made a difference.

That would be Judy Collins, the extraordinary soprano singer-songwriter (two Grammy Awards and membership in the Grammy Hall of Fame for "Both Sides Now"), classical piano prodigy, guitarist, filmmaker (nominated for an Academy Award in 1975), feminist, political activist and author of memoirs and fiction (nine books in all).

But there have been darker sides to her life.

In the early days Collins, now 67, struggled with bouts of alcoholism and drug abuse, bulimia, depression, suicidal thoughts and stints in rehab centers. In 1992 her son, Clark, committed suicide at age 33.

In 2003 you wrote Sanity & Grace, in which you shed light on the subject of suicide.

Doherty: Weakest Link?

Pete Doherty wants to appear on TV quiz show "The Weakest Link" in a bid to win Kate Moss back, it has been claimed. The Babyshambles star, who recently split with the supermodel once again, apparently believes she will be impressed by his intelligence if he takes part in the programme. Doherty claims that by sparring with Anne Robinson he will be able to prove he is about more than drug addiction and tabloid headlines. "People might not realise it but I am well educated and well read. I can prove to people there is more to me than just drugs", he explained. Meanwhile, a 'source' backed-up the plan, commenting: "Kate has this romantic notion of love and finds intelligence a huge turn-on. "Pete thinks going on the show will prove to her that he does have the depth and IQ that she loves so much." Babyshambles release their new album, "Shotter's Nation", on October 1.
