Katona held at knifepoint by home invader

WILMSLOW, England, July 16 (UPI) -- Rock singer and reality TV star Kerry Katona and her baby daughter were held captive at knifepoint by burglars early Monday at their home in Wilmslow, England.

The former Atomic Kitten singer, her child and her husband, Mark Croft, escaped unharmed, even though the thieves were allegedly armed with a blade, sledgehammer and crowbar, police told The Guardian.

One intruder held Katona and her daughter in a downstairs room while her husband was taken through the house by two others who reportedly collected valuables, then made off with the family's BMW, the newspaper said.

Katona's publicist Max Clifford said Croft told him his wife was "in a dreadful state" after a knife was held to her throat as her house was being robbed.

Rochester Asks Residents For Input

Rochester's housing development is asking residents for input on how to make the city a better place to live.

A series of public hearings this week is part of a three stage study on the city's housing policy.

"I've been here 53 years," Rochester resident Elizabeth Esposito said.

Esposito lives on the city's northeast side, one of the four quadrants part of a Rochester housing development study.

Someone robbed Esposito's home for the third time last week.

"I don't know if I like it anymore," Esposito said.

That's the kind of feedback city leaders want to hear during this week's public hearings on city life, the good and bad.

"Right now the input we get from the public is extremely important," Community Development Director Julio Vazquez said.

Alcoholics Anonymous offers hope to those who stick it out

Q: Does Alcoholics Anonymous actually help people quit drinking? How does it work?

A: Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous is the oldest, best-known and most successful mutual-help organization. By some estimates, as many as 1 in 10 Americans, including two-thirds of those ever treated for alcoholism, have attended at least one AA meeting.

Since 1935, new treatments, including drugs and behavioral therapies, have been introduced for alcoholism. But the widely available, nearly cost-free AA meetings still offer the best hope to many. Researchers have begun to study how and why the AA approach to addiction succeeds or fails.

The guiding principles of AA are the 12 steps, broadcast in a volume called the "Big Book" (AA World Services, 2002). These guidelines call for a spiritual transformation.
