Fighting addiction is a struggle at any price

High-profile alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers seem like a home away from home for Hollywood celebs like Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie and Robert Downey Jr.

Some charge nearly $50,000 a month.

But since Lohan's arrest last week on charges of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine -- after several in-and-out stays at pricey rehab clinics -- one wonders what, if anything, works.

Headlines about backsliding celebrities should not lead people to believe rehabilitation clinics are not worthwhile.

However luxurious -- or Spartan -- the surroundings, however famous or workaday the patient, it's not unusual for people fighting addictions to fail often before they may finally succeed, say doctors and those who run rehab clinics.

To be considered for the experimental program, potential campers aged 14 to 22 can visit the site with their parents to take a psychological test and speak with professional counselors for evaluation.

According to research by Shanghai's youth affairs office, those seriously addicted to the web should receive medical help, but this rarely happens. A low level of Internet addiction is believed to exist in more than 10 percent of Shanghai youngsters.

Winehouse and hubby went back to doping just days after confession

London, Aug 15 (ANI): Though Amy Winehouse and her hubby had confessed about their drug addiction to their family and friends, it didn't take much time for them to get back to the habit.

A friend of the 'Rehab' singer caught the couple taking heroin at a 3,000 pounds -a-night suite in London, days after the confession.

The couple agreed to undergo rehab treatment only after witnessing a showdown involving their families.

The music video assistant's mum Georgette Civil said that both of them have to be blamed for the drug problem. "She told me she was addicted to heroin and cocaine. She admitted 'It's silly, but you just get carried away'," the Mirror quoted Winehouse's mum-in-law, as saying.

"You can't blame Amy and you can't blame Blake.

Former NBA ref pleads guilty to felony charges

Former referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty to two felony charges Wednesday in an NBA betting scandal that rocked the league and raised questions about the integrity of games.

Donaghy faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is sentenced for conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting wagering information through interstate commerce. He was released on a $250,000 bond.

Speaking in code during telephone calls, Donaghy provided recommendations, called "picks," to co-conspirators about what team they should bet on, said U.S. District Court Judge Carol Bagley Amon. If he was correct, they paid him $5,000.
