| Rockland schools for substance abuse counselors merge
Two Rockland schools that train students to become credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselors have merged. The CASAC School of the Rockland Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependence and the Addiction Counselors Training Program of Rockland County will now operate as the Rockland Chemical Dependency Studies Institute out of the new Haverstraw Center in Haverstraw. "We've had two competing agencies that are now bringing together the finest leaders and instructors in the field under one roof," said Debbie Maidman, operations manager of the new school. "They are coming together with the same mission, the same focus." Accredited counselors who graduate from the school work in outpatient and inpatient treatment centers, the criminal justice system, schools, department of social services and department of transportation evaluations, rehab and halfway houses.
Celebs aside, rehab can work
Lindsay Lohan is back in rehab. It's not surprising, really. How serious can one be about overcoming addiction when one jumps back into the Los Angeles party circuit wearing an ankle bracelet designed to measure one's blood-alcohol content days after checking out of a chic substance-abuse treatment center? Lohan faces new charges of misdemeanor drunken driving, felony cocaine possession and driving on a suspended license following an incident early Tuesday morning. She had been out of rehab less than two weeks. It is not unusual to relapse in substance abuse recovery, celebrity or no. Actor Daniel Baldwin, who allowed ABC News' "Primetime" to tape various stages of his three-month drug-treatment program in Malibu, Calif., reportedly tried nine other treatment centers in his battle with addiction.
Baldwin Blasts Hollywood Rehabs
Former drug addict DANIEL BALDWIN has hit out at celebrity rehab clinics, insisting they are too soft on troubled stars. The actor has served time in rehab for cocaine addiction - and is alarmed at the freedom recent rehab inmates Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears have enjoyed. Speaking on TV talk show Larry King Live after Lohan's arrest for DUI - just ten days after she left Malibu, California's Promises Center - Baldwin says, "You see Britney is in there. She goes and leaves for a few hours to go have lunch or whatever it is. And then there's Lindsay who goes to work out for a few hours and she comes back. "All the while, you can use your Blackberry while you're in there. I think it is bogus. I think Hollywood rehabs have a bad name for a good reason. They're not that good. "Promises has shown itself to have a very poor track record, in my opinion, from what I've seen.
Host and station a match made in heaven
NORTHEAST FLORIDA -- Long-time successful business owner and recovering drug and alcohol addict Paul Porter was looking to reach people in need of rehabilitation. And Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting Corp. was looking to reach more people through its local radio stations. So when Porter walked into the multiple-station owner's local office off Belfort Road with the idea to start a 12-step addiction recovery program called Real Recovery Radio, the company agreed to air it on its news talk WBOB 1320 AM station in Jacksonville. Porter's concept was in line with the broadcaster's expansion plan to air more new and diverse programs at a higher wattage recently approved by the Federal Communications Commission. .
Addiction can be cured in 24 hours: Expert
SOON, addicts will be able to overcome their weaknesses within 24 hours, according to de-addiction expert Narendra Chitte who plans to start around 1,000 centres all over the State as part of his 'Tobacco, alcohol chale jao' campaign. He was speaking at a press conference here on Monday. The centres will offer free de-addiction programmes for the poor, while others will be required to pay a nominal fee. Chitte runs a de-addiction programme for alcohol, gutkha, nicotine and drug addicts in Pradhikaran, Nigdi. He describes a four-step process for tackling addiction. "Lack of self-confidence and motivation push an addict towards substance abuse. These centres will provide counselling, psychological techniques, a herbal programme and detox consultation that relieve a person of his substance abuse within a day," he said.
Bill could aid area program
An area alcohol and substance abuse program could receive $150,000 in federal funding under an appropriations bill passed Thursday by the U.S. House, officials announced. Through its Overcomers program, Project Focus provides counseling and placement in rehabilitation facilities for individuals who suffer from alcohol and drug addictions, said the Rev. Kris Erskine, the chief executive officer of the organization. The group is primarily funded through donations and operates on a $15,000 annual budget, Erskine said. The federal funding would allow the organization to build a rehabilitation facility in Bryan-College Station, he said. "We would be able to treat our people right here at home," he said, noting that the group sends individuals to treatment facilities all over the state.

Fighting meth in Lane County
The federal government could soon be helping Lane County fight methamphetamine. The U.S. House of Representatives has approved House Resolution 3093. That would give half a million dollars to agencies in Lane County and the South Coast Interagency Narcotics Task Force. A lot of the money would go toward programs for treatment. "Oregon has been dealing with methamphetamine for years, and we are very much on top of what we need to do to stop meth and its destructiveness in our community," says Lucy Zammarelli with the Willamette Family Treatment Center. In 2004, more than two thousand adults in Lane County were treated for methamphetamine addiction. The legislation still has to go through the senate before going to President Bush's desk for his signature. .
