| Rockland schools for substance abuse counselors merge
Two Rockland schools that train students to become credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselors have merged. The CASAC School of the Rockland Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependence and the Addiction Counselors Training Program of Rockland County will now operate as the Rockland Chemical Dependency Studies Institute out of the new Haverstraw Center in Haverstraw. "We've had two competing agencies that are now bringing together the finest leaders and instructors in the field under one roof," said Debbie Maidman, operations manager of the new school. "They are coming together with the same mission, the same focus." Amy Winehouse in rehab?
Did Amy Winehouse go to rehab? We don't know, know, know. The defiantly self-destructive bad-girl of British pop collapsed Wednesday in London and was hospitalized for exhaustion. Thursday, British press reports said the hard-drinking, hard-partying singer had checked into The Priory, a facility that treats alcoholism, drug addiction and eating disorders -- another problem Winehouse has had in the past. At the same time, British music website nme.com claimed that Winehouse is not in rehab, but sequestered in a London hotel room following a drug overdose. .
Man shares burden for addicts
My name is Edward Fortson and my mission has been to assist people who need help to recover from drug addiction. In July of 2000 God burdened my heart to help establish a Christian Rehabilitation Center in Northeast Arkansas. I researched different organizations and toured a facilities in Tuscumbia, Ala. called Restoration Ranch. This center was a division of Mission Teens, Inc. which operated nine different centers across the country. At the time I believed that establishing a center was what I was being led to do. In December of that same year I started to actually work with the people who needed to go into the centers. I worked with a young woman in jail and helped her get into a center. I had a lot to learn and no clear guidance or handbook on how to do this. I have learned about centers, the jail systems, court systems and even the prison systems.
Feds say more teens raiding the medicine cabinet
The federal government says the number of teens abusing street drugs is on the downturn, but the bad news is that more kids are turning to the family medicine cabinet for a quick and free high. U.S. drug czar John Walters was in town on Friday visiting Austin Recovery, a drug treatment center in Northeast Austin. Walters thanked Austin Recovery for standing on the frontlines in the war against drugs. He also spoke about one of the most dangerous emerging drugs among teenagers: the ones in your medicine cabinet. "They get into the medicine cabinet and take pills that are either no longer being used or are left around," John Walters of the National Drug Control Policy said. The government says prescription addiction is at an all-time high among teens. If the teens are lucky, they may wind up in treatment before the problem gets worse.
Wheelchair was towed as woes piled up
You're on the streets. You get run over by an 18-wheeler. You wind up in a wheelchair. You drink too much on the July Fourth. Metro Police arrests you. The wheelchair gets towed to a yard downtown. You get out of jail, try to get your wheelchair back. You use crutches to get to different agencies, but mostly use the phone because it hurts to walk. One night in late July, once again, an officer runs across you with a can of beer and sends you to jail. By this time, you've learned that $200, nearly half your monthly Social Security check, will get the wheelchair out of the yard, a special price brokered by a dogged social worker. The catch: you have only until Monday. After that, the wheelchair goes up for auction Aug. 24, when you'll still be in jail.
Barrow Neurological Institute among the best
When Matthew Brandt, an electrician and active grandfather of three from Vail, Ariz., broke his neck July 4 while boogie boarding in Laguna Beach, Calif., he knew that he wanted to go to Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. "We knew exactly where we were going, and we were going here come hell or high water," recalled Brandt, who was flown to Barrow on July 16 after two surgeries at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, Calif. Brandt is not alone in his opinion of Barrow. In July, US News & World Report again named St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center as one of the 10 best hospitals in the U.S. for neurology and neurosurgery. Since it opened on the St. Joseph's campus at Fifth Avenue and Thomas Road in 1962, Barrow has regularly been recognized as one of the nation's leading neuroscience centers.
Social Security Q&A
Q: I plan to take early retirement at age 62. Will my Medicare coverage begin then? No. Medicare benefits based on retirement do not begin until you are 65. Benefits may begin earlier if you become too disabled to work. If you retire at 62, you might be able to continue to have medical insurance coverage through your employer.
