Rockland schools for substance abuse counselors merge

Two Rockland schools that train students to become credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselors have merged.

The CASAC School of the Rockland Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependence and the Addiction Counselors Training Program of Rockland County will now operate as the Rockland Chemical Dependency Studies Institute out of the new Haverstraw Center in Haverstraw.

"We've had two competing agencies that are now bringing together the finest leaders and instructors in the field under one roof," said Debbie Maidman, operations manager of the new school. "They are coming together with the same mission, the same focus."

Accredited counselors who graduate from the school work in outpatient and inpatient treatment centers, the criminal justice system, schools, department of social services and department of transportation evaluations, rehab and halfway houses.

Military canines live, die like soldiers they serve

SAN ANTONIO — When he came to, the Marine's arm hung limp. It had been broken by ball bearings hurled so hard from a suicide bomb that they also became embedded in his gun. Yet Brendan Poelaert's thoughts quickly turned to his patrol dog.

The powerful Belgian Malinois named Flapoor had served him as partner and protector for the past four months in Iraq. Now, the dog staggered a few steps along the Ramadi street, then stared blankly. Blood poured from his chest.

"I didn't care about my injuries, my arm," his handler said. "I'm telling the medic, 'I got to get my dog to the vet!'"

About 2,000 of these working dogs confront danger alongside American soldiers, largely in the Middle East. With noses that detect scents up to a third of a mile away, many sniff for explosives in Iraq.

Proteolix starts clinical trial of multiple myeloma drug

Proteolix Inc. enrolled the first patient in a mid-stage clinical trial of its drug carfilzomib, intended as a treatment for multiple myeloma.

The South San Francisco drug company is running the test with the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium at 10 centers associated with the consortium. Centers participating in the Phase II trial include Emory University, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Michigan and Washington University. Patients enrolled in the study will have relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma -- meaning their cancer has reappeared after they were treated with at least two other FDA-approved therapies and that their cancer is restant to treatment.

NIDA's Scientific Journal To Become Journal Of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health, announced today that it is changing the name of its scientific journal Science & Practice Perspectives to the Journal of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice, beginning with the November issue. The new title is designed to better reflect the journal's commitment to covering the exchange of ideas among researchers, clinicians, and others in the field of addiction science. NIDA will also increase the number of issues per year from one to two in order to accommodate the sizeable portfolio of scientific literature being produced in the growing field of drug abuse and addiction research. This peer-reviewed NIDA publication is the most widely distributed journal on addiction science.

The Journal of Addiction Science & Clinical Practice will also be included in the National Library of Medicine's MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) database, significantly expanding the reach and influence of its contributors' findings and insights.

Baldwin Blasts Hollywood Rehabs

Former drug addict DANIEL BALDWIN has hit out at celebrity rehab clinics, insisting they are too soft on troubled stars. The actor has served time in rehab for cocaine addiction - and is alarmed at the freedom recent rehab inmates Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears have enjoyed. Speaking on TV talk show Larry King Live after Lohan's arrest for DUI - just ten days after she left Malibu, California's Promises Center - Baldwin says, "You see Britney is in there. She goes and leaves for a few hours to go have lunch or whatever it is. And then there's Lindsay who goes to work out for a few hours and she comes back. "All the while, you can use your Blackberry while you're in there. I think it is bogus. I think Hollywood rehabs have a bad name for a good reason. They're not that good. "Promises has shown itself to have a very poor track record, in my opinion, from what I've seen.

Local DJ looks to help other addicts

As local radio personality Rich Dennis, Rich Knott already lived with two names. His addiction to heroin meant having to live with two lives.

I wanted to party all night, the 43 year-old said. I wanted to do it til it was all gone.

But just as a $200-per-day heroin habit doesnt happen overnight, neither does recovery.

For Knott, his path to addiction started with painkillers for a bad back and ended in a 28-day stay in rehabilitation not to mention a stint in jail for robbing a convenience store.

Now five years sober, Knott wants to tell people about drug abuse and its consequences.

When I think about what I did to my friends and family, he said, and the financial hole I put us in ...

Knott said the formation of Operation Our Town inspired him to share what he has learned, as did the people who have asked for his advice since he gave up his drug habit.
